SUMMARY:2023 TB Elimination Alliance Summit
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception in 2019\, TEA distributed over $800\,000 in mini-grant funding to 36 community health organizations. TEA’s Mini-Grant Program funds community-centered projects serving Asian\, Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander\, Hispanic/Latino\, and African American communities that are disproportionately impacted by TB. \nTEA looks forward to building on the progress made so far towards TB elimination by inviting you to join the 2023 TEA virtual summit on November 8-9\, 2023. This exciting event will take place via Zoom from 7:00am-11:00am HT / 9:00am-1:00pm PT / 12:00-4:00pm ET. \nThis year’s summit will focus on the theme “Building Healthy Communities Free of TB”\, showcasing TEA’s Mini-Grant Program. Previously\, he was Director of the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at CDC\, Director of CDC-Kenya\, and Director of CDC-Uganda. He has focused his public health career on science-based\, practical programs that increase health equity and decrease incidence and mortality. Dr. Mermin was an internal medicine resident at San Francisco General Hospital\, and a preventive medicine resident at CDC and the California Department of Health Services. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Stanford University School of Medicine\, and received his MPH from Emory University. He is a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service.\n \nFeatured Speakers \nNoele P. Nelson\, MD\, PhD\, MPH\, Chief of Prevention Branch\, Division of Viral Hepatitis\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \nDr. Noele Nelson is a Pediatrician\, and she holds a doctorate in Epidemiology. She joined the CDC/Division of Viral Hepatitis nine years ago and currently serves as the Chief of the Prevention Branch. In this role she oversees national efforts to test\, implement and monitor hepatitis B and C care and cure cascades\, perinatal hepatitis B and C prevention projects and viral hepatitis guideline development. Dr. Nelson focuses on hepatitis A and B vaccine research and policy and serves on the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices Steering Committee. She also has a strong interest in emergency response and has served on numerous CDC responses. \nPhilip LoBue\, MD\, FACP\, FCCP\, Director of Division of Tuberculosis Elimination\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \nPhilip LoBue is the Director of the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE) in CDC’s National Center for HIV\, Viral Hepatitis\, STD\, and TB Prevention. Dr. LoBue received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He received postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of California San Diego Medical Center where he was subsequently a Clinical Instructor and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine from 1995 to 1999. In 1999\, Dr. LoBue joined DTBE as a medical epidemiologist assigned to the Tuberculosis Control Program in San Diego County\, CA. In 2004\, he moved to CDC headquarters in Atlanta\, GA to become Chief of the Medical Consultation Team of DTBE. Between 2006 and 2014\, Dr. LoBue was the Associate Director for Science for the division. Dr. LoBue is a fellow in the American College of Physicians and American College of Chest Physicians. He is also a member of the American Thoracic Society (ATS)\, in which he has served on the Ethics and Conflict of Interest Committee and the Program (chair 2008-2009)\, Planning\, and Executive Committees of the Microbiology\, Tuberculosis\, and Pulmonary Infections Assembly. Dr. LoBue has authored or co-authored more the 80 publications including peer-reviewed journal articles\, book chapters\, and Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report articles. He has chaired or served on more than 10 guidelines and recommendations committees and panels for multiple organizations including CDC\, ATS\, the US Federal Tuberculosis Task Force\, and the World Health Organization. DESCRIPTION:Join us with Tenzin Kunor from We Are TB and Dr. Sheldon Riklon from UAMS Health Family Medical Center in Fayetteville\, AR and Community Clinic in Northwest Arkansas to learn more about a TB survivor’s experience\, and the role of community health centers around latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and tuberculosis (TB) disease testing and treatment. \nIn 2019\, a total of 8\,916 TB disease cases were reported in the United States and its Territories. Out of those cases\, TB disease was reported in 3\,150 Asians. Asians and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders are disproportionately impacted by TB at a greater rate compared to other racial and ethnic groups. For example\, the rate of TB disease is 32 times higher for Asians than whites. DESCRIPTION:The Inaugural 2020 TB Summit took place on November 18-19\, 2020 with the vision of learning and sharing focused on outreach to Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander communities with the highest TB burden. SUMMARY:Webinar: “Addressing Latent Tuberculosis Infection And Tuberculosis In Asian\, Native Hawaiian\, And Pacific Islander Communities: The Role Of Health Centers For Testing And Treatment” (October 2020)
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, a total of 9\,025 TB disease cases were reported in the United States and its Territories. Asians\, Native Hawaiians\, and Pacific Islanders are disproportionately impacted by TB at a greater rate compared to other racial and ethnic groups. For example\, the rate of TB disease is 33 times higher for Asians than whites. Considering the complex health and social needs of the Asian\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander communities\, health centers play a critical role as a safety net provider and community partner to address special and vulnerable populations with increased risk TB. \nThis webinar will provide an overview of LTBI and TB disease; discuss successful strategies for testing and treatment in high need populations; and share information about the new TB Community Engagement Network initiative. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nProvide an overview of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) as a major driver of tuberculosis (TB) disease\, and how TB disease represents a health disparity in the U.S. and its Territories\nDiscuss successful strategies for screening\, testing\, and treatment in high need populations in community health care settings\nLearn about the new TB Community Engagement Network initiative\n\nIntended Audience:  \nHealth centers\, Primary Care Associations (PCAs)\, Health Center Controlled Networks (HCCN)\, and organizations interested and/or invested in TB elimination and LTBI treatment among at-risk communities. \nWebinar Resources:  \n\nWebinar Slides\nWebinar Recording
